Chat with Alberto Ruiz Rojo

If one night has been really important for Alberto Ruiz Rojo since the year began, it was January 30th. That night Alberto was awarded the Goya Prize for the Best Fictional Short for "Diez Minutos", his latest cinematic contribution starring Gustavo Salmerón and Eva Marciel. This prize completed the upward cycle that over the last year has made him one of the most promising young directors in Spanish filmmaking. To begin, "Diez Minutos" was the short that received most prizes during 2004 (winning over 85 awards in Spanish and international festivals). In addition to this long list of distinctions, Alberto was also awarded the Best Fontvella Spot Prize in the first edition of NotodoPubliFest.com for his "Vida Sana". (Click on the title to see it.)

To celebrate Alberto's success, we have invited him to join us in our Chat and explain first hand his feelings upon becoming "short-maker of the year" as well as his future plans. The date is next Friday, 25 February, at 12.00 noon, although if you prefer you can begin leaving your questions now by clicking HERE.

The reason for the success of "Diez Minutos"

"Diez Minutos" tells the story of a young man (Gustavo Salmerón) who calls his mobile phone's customer service department to request some information he must have in order to get back his girlfriend, who has just left him. What he faces, however, are the inflexibility and continuous negative answers given by the operator (Eva Marciel). Alberto Ruiz Rojo believes that the key to his short's success is found in the "spectator's almost total identification with the story - everyone tells me 'that's happened to me too' - and in having been able to create a universal tale that does not belong to any specific place or refer to a certain age or type of person; ultimately, it shares the traditional plot of man against the system with thousands of stories. What is important is to have been able to structure it in such a way that the spectator gets hooked and is eager to find out how it all ends."

"Diez Minutos" is now available on DVD in the collection "Los mejores cortos del cine español. Vol. 5" available in FNAC.
